*INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY - GREAT TENANTS * Playground, Churches & Shopping NEARBY The Town of Coniston is located 7 miles (11.27 km) east of Sudbury in the former Neelon Township. Neelon (named for Sylvester Neelon, an M.P.P. for Lincoln County) came from the first land survey of the area done in 1883. In 1902 the Butler family was the first to settle in the area. The 4 of them (John, Peter & their parents) cleared about 18 acres of land to farm. In the next 2 years another 5 farming families had come. They grew hay, rye, and oats. From the early 1900s the area developed rapidly; The Canadian Northern Railway (CNR) began constructing a rail line through the eastern part of the area (crossing the CPR main line established in 1883) and St. Clair Construction Co. established the Coniston Woodworks Lumber Mill to help meet demands for lumber in the railway industry and to supply timber for mining roast yards across the Sudbury Basin. By 1905 20 more families had settled in the growing community (many to work on the CNR line from Coniston to Capreol). By 1908, CPR had built the Toronto-Romford line next to Coniston. With the additional rail line industrial business expanded as well. At this time, Dennis OBrien led the charge in trying to secure mail service for the community, which meant it needed a name. While OBrien suggested Town of Neelon, it was the idea of railway superintendent T. R. Johnson that was chosen in the end. Johnson had come upon the name while reading a novel set in ""Coniston Lake District in N.W. England. The townspeople liked the name, which was approved by the government, so the community became known as the Village of Coniston. Did you know: When Victoria Mines smelting operation moved to Coniston in the early 1900s, workers and their houses came too! Many houses were transported by rail to Coniston where they stand to this day! Courtesy of the Greater Sudbury Museums and Coniston Historical Group Find them on Facebook! (id:3334)
